Gum Disease Statistics and Available Treatment in San Diego, CA - Clairemont Mesa Dental CenterGum disease, or Periodontitis, is one of the most common diseases in the world, affecting over 50% of people over age 30. If it’s not treated, gum disease can lead to bone loss, tooth loosening, and eventually, tooth loss and the need for dentures.

Signs and Causes of Periodontal Disease:

  • Bleeding when brushing
  • Bleeding when flossing
  • Pain while brushing
  • Pain while flossing
  • Puffy or red gums
  • Not getting your teeth cleaned every 6 months
  • Not flossing daily

In order to treat gum disease, Dr. Ali might recommend a “deeper cleaning” called Scaling and Root Planing. Like getting a filling for a cavity, Scaling and Root Planing is a necessary treatment to fix the disease, and if it is put off, can result in losing your teeth.

After Scaling and Root Planing is completed, you might need more frequent cleanings, called Periodontal Maintenance to make sure the gum infection does not return. This is often prescribed for every 3-4 months, and continues for life to make sure the infection doesn’t return and the disease doesn’t get worse.
